The virus definition has also been updated.
The WHO said in a statement on Wednesday that the WHO was “confident” the new virus was “more serious than previously suspected.”
The new WHO statement said: “We believe the outbreak of Wuhan VIRuses is a pandemic, and we are urging all countries to be ready to respond in accordance with the guidelines and to implement measures to prevent and control transmission.
The outbreak of these viruses has spread quickly and it is crucial that countries are able to identify, assess and control outbreaks quickly, including in the context of international travel.”
The CDC said that more than 300 cases have been reported in China and in South Korea, while more than 1,000 have been confirmed in the U.S. and Canada.
The virus has killed at least 19 people, including 10 children, and infected a total of more than 100,000 people worldwide.
It is the third-deadliest pandemic in history.
The virus has claimed more than 16,000 lives.
