People living in Beijing, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, said they were leaving their homes to escape the outbreak.
The outbreak hit the city late Friday, but officials warned residents to stay at home until Monday to avoid infection.
The country’s health authorities have said more than 50,000 cases and more than 2,000 deaths have been reported in the country.
Chinese health authorities are also trying to identify thousands of babies born with microcephaly, a rare neurological condition that can lead to paralysis.
The disease has a rare genetic mutation and has been linked to a surge in cases in China.
The new virus has caused some of the worst infections in the world, including one in which more than 400 people died.

The country has a long history of fighting outbreaks of infectious diseases and the pandemic was particularly harsh.
But the government has tried to tamp down the impact of the virus, which killed hundreds of thousands in the 1990s and has killed more than 100,000 people.
The government has imposed strict curfews and other restrictions, but a few hospitals have been reopened and a small number of people have been allowed to stay home to protect against the virus.
“I think it’s too early to say whether this is going to be the end of the pandemics,” said Dr. Han Qian, an infectious disease specialist at Beijing’s National Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
While the outbreak is now in its early stages, the strain of the Zika virus is not as virulent as previously thought, and it is likely to spread easily through the air, said David Satterfield, a virologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
But experts have warned that even in the midst of the outbreak, the virus is likely not to cause widespread illness.
More: “It would be very premature to say that this will be the last of the epidemics,” Satterfields said.
At the height of the Beijing pandemic, more than 6,000 suspected cases of Zika virus infection were registered.
Since then, there have been just a few hundred.
There have been no new cases of the disease reported.
The WHO said it expects the virus to spread slowly and quickly.
The virus has not been linked directly to an increase in cases of microcephela, but it could be spreading faster, especially in countries where the virus has been circulating for a long time.
In an interview on Monday, China’s health minister, Chen Yunyuan, said the country’s national anti-tuberculosis campaign is working well and has reduced the number of cases of TB.
He added that China’s efforts to fight the spread of the viruses were working.
Zika virus outbreak: The Centers for Disease Dynamics and Prevention says that since the beginning of the year there have so far been 7,067 confirmed and probable cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.
It says the virus that causes SARS is not currently circulating in China, though the virus had been circulating in the Middle East and Africa for a number of years.
China has recorded 1,091 cases of H1N1 coronavirus, the most severe coronaviruses to be found in China since the disease was first identified in Shanghai in December.
Since March, China has recorded more than 11,500 cases of influenza and 1,300 deaths.
