An outbreak of coronaviruses has been reported in the United States and other countries, with more than 5,500 cases reported.
The virus has been traced to an imported shipment of live anthrax from China.
Infectious disease expert Professor Anthony Fauci, who is based at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said the pandemic was the first time the virus had been introduced to the US, but it could be spreading across the country.
He said the new coronaviral strains were “so different” from the ones circulating in China and India that it was “extremely likely” that the virus could spread in the world.
“What you’re seeing is the emergence of these very different types of virus that have been circulating in different parts of the world and that are circulating in a way that is potentially very dangerous for us,” Professor Fauce said.
“The emergence of all these different viruses is a good sign that the pandemics that we’re facing right now are not simply going to disappear, that they’re going to be able to persist in different areas and have impacts on human health.”‘
It’s going to get worse’Professor Faucci said the coronavides could spread even in the U.S. as the virus spreads to new populations.
“It’s been going on for a while now, and the US is a place where it’s going at an incredible pace,” he said.”[It’s] going to become a lot more widespread, because there’s going be more of it.”
And the longer we let it get out, the worse it is going to go.
“Professor Fauer said the US and other developed countries were not prepared to contain the virus, and that the world was heading for a “frozen crisis”.”
We are on the brink of a global pandemic, and we are seeing what happens in countries where it is very difficult to control the virus,” he told Radio New Zealand.”
We’re going through a very important transition.
It’s going, in my view, to get much worse before it gets better.
